Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2012 - Town Hall, Civic Way, TN1 1RS

Town Hall - Council Chambers, Tunbridge Wells / Rob Sanders 2005

The Town Hall is part of the Tunbridge Wells Civic Complex, which includes the Assembly Hall Theatre, Museum and Art Gallery and Police Station and former Magistrates Court. Inside the Grade II listed building, visitors may come into the Council Chamber and Mayor’s Parlour. Various artefacts, including the Burmese Bell, and pictures from the museum collection will be on display.

The development was the subject of an architectural competition in 1934 which was won by Percy Thomas and Ernest Prestwich. The building is in the Neo Georgian style with “Style Moderne” detailing. The stylized Greek Key decorations in the interior tie in with other designs inside and outside the complex. Prestwich’s first major prize came he was still a third year student at Liverpool University – a commission to build the Diamond at Port Sunlight. Later he and Thomas won competitions to design Swansea Guildhall and the Swinton and Pendlebury Town Hall (now the Salford Civic Centre). Their style has been summed up as having “symmetry, simplicity and sincerity”. Both men’s careers included designing a wide range of public sector buildings. Thomas went on to be President of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
