“Brimming with architectural and natural delights” was the verdict of the town’s Member of Parliament.
English Heritage listed early Victorian mortuary garden with winding paths among mature trees.
Over 600 monuments to the great and the good of Victorian Tunbridge Wells. Also commemorated are figures of national interest notably Jacob Bell - founder of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Dr Golding Bird – a notable physician and experimenter and Sydney Smirke - architect of many handsome buildings including the Round Reading Room at the British Library.
Despite its small size the cemetery is also an important refuge for plants and insects and animals in this densely built up area of Tunbridge Wells. Visitors are welcome to join an historical guided walk of about an hour in the cemetery on Friday and Sunday or come to a talk at St James’s Church Hall on Friday entitled “1862 Life and Death in Victorian Tunbridge Wells”.

The talk is one of three events being organized by St James’s Church for Heritage Open Days. Everyone is welcome to come to the exhibition in the church and to book a place on the guided walk Ferndale and the Origins of St James.
