Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2010 - St Thomas’s Church, Church Lane, Capel TN12 6SX

Capel Church Interior

The most unusual feature of this small Norman Wealden church – reputed to have been built on the spot where Thomas A Becket preached - is the extensive thirteenth century wall paintings. In a tranquil rural setting, the Grade I listed church also has some fourteenth century architectural features. The tower was partly rebuilt after a fire in 1639. Inside, the crown-post roof is striking and there are various interesting fittings. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The Heritage Open Days 2010 event includes an exhibition by artists resident in the village of Capel. A wide range of pictures and photographs is on display and for purchase. There will be short music recitals during both days.

What visitors said last year:

Really lovely old church with wall paintings. Very helpful and enthusiastic people to show you around and answer questions. Nice display of artwork from a local art group and convenient parking. We really enjoyed this visit. SR
