St Matthew's Air Raid shelter

Step back to World War II by visiting the large air raid shelter under the school playground. When kitted out in March 1940, it had eighteen yards of curtains and forty four benches seating around two hundred and fifty. Facilities also included nine portable closets; four and a half gallons of sanitary fluid; sixteen large dry battery lamps, thirteen small dry battery lamps and - in case of any direct hits - two shovels, two picks, one crowbar and a seven pound hammer. On one notable occasion, the school pupils sheltered as the first unexploded doodlebug in Britain was dealt with further along Powder Mill Lane.
