Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2012 - St. Mary The Virgin Church, Speldhurst Hill, Speldhurst, TN3 0PA

St. Mary The Virgin Church, Speldhurst

Situated where a church has stood for over a thousand years the present church – the fourth on the site – was built by John Oldrid Scott in 1871 in Early Gothic style using local sandstone. The ten magnificent stained glass windows are by William Morris and Edward Burne Jones. Other windows are by Charles Kempe and Clayton & Bell. The furnishings are by George Gilbert Scott and Charles Oldrid Scott, the father and son of the architect. There are interesting monuments to eminent people of Tunbridge Wells including Major Yorke. A guide will be on hand to explain more about the windows.
