Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2011 - St John the Baptist Church, Leicester Square, Penshurst, TN11 8BL

Woodhurst

Penshurst Church is notable for being the venue for the last public act of Thomas A Becket - he installed the vicar Wilhelmus just two days before his assassination in 1170. The church dates from the twelfth century and contains the family chapel of the Sidneys, Earls of Leicester and Viscounts de L’Isle, together with memorials to a former Viceroy and Governor General of India, Army Commanders-in-Chief and Naval Commissioners.

Visitors approach the church through Leicester Square. On the left facing the church is the fifteenth century church house or Old Guild House, one of only two such surviving in England.

On Sunday at 1500 there will be a guided tour by the author of the recently published history of the church.
