St. John the Evangelist Church, Groombridge Hill, Groombridge

This Grade II* listed church, in perpendicular Gothic style, was built in 1625 by John Packer, Clerk of the Privy Seal to Charles I. He erected it to give thanks that the King returned to England unmarried after a trip abroad to court a Spanish princess. The church, which is within the parish of Speldhurst, contains a wealth of stained glass, including a window dating from 1625. Other windows are the work of nineteenth century Sussex artist Charles Kempe. Other notable features include one of the few remaining one handed clocks in England and interesting brasses.
