Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2009 - St Barnabas Church, Stanley Road, TN1 2RH

St Barnabas Church - Interior (Post Card) - Collection: Katharina Mahler, Tunbridge Wells

Because Saint Barnabas Church is built in a dip, it can be quite hard to spot from Camden Road - which is extraordinary given the scale of the building! Many people walk past the formidable and imposing brick walls unaware that within lies a Church of exquisite beauty. This spectacular cathedral-like Anglo Catholic parish church has fittings by Ninian Comper and Martin Travers and stained glass by Heaton Butler and Bayne. A particularly unusual feature is the mortuary chapel in the crypt. For Heritage Open Days there is an extensive historical exhibition, including local and school history as well as parish records. Guided tours are available at various points during the day including a visit to the church’s historic mortuary chapel.
