Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2011 - St Barnabas Church, Stanley Road, TN1 2RH

St Barnabas Church - Interior (Post Card) - Collection: Katharina Mahler, Tunbridge Wells

A spectacular and ornate brick built Gothic church sometimes known as the cathedral of Tunbridge Wells. Stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Baye and fittings by Ninian Comper. Dating from 1887/8 some features were designed by an architect who worked at Walsingham in Norfolk. A particularly unusual feature is the vaulted mortuary chapel in the crypt, an essential facility for a parish of very small houses.

For Heritage Open Days there is an extensive historical exhibition, including local and school history as well as parish records. Guided tours are available at various points during the day including a visit to the church’s historic mortuary chapel.
