Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2011 - Pembury Upper Church, Hastings Road, TN2 4PD

Pembury Upper Church

The Upper Church in Pembury was consecrated in 1847. It was built to reflect the growing population around the Upper and Lower Greens on the main highways through the village. The site for the church and the stone for its construction were gifts of the Marquis Camden of Bayham. This Grade II* listed church building is now very different from the original design. In 1984 the original ninety two foot steeple, with its crumbling stone, was removed for safety reasons. A few years later the interior of the church was reordered, to be better suited for modern use. The sensitive and simple layout of the chancel blends well with the colours of the east window, and instils an atmosphere of peace and reflection. Of particular interest is a stained glass window in the west end of the north aisle, made in 1938 by the world renowned artist Leonard Walker, the principal of London's St John's Art School. Walker used a slab glass technique, which is very much his own characteristic artistic style.
