Visitors are given a behind the scenes guided tour including the vaults, which are not normally open to the public and which provide storage for the majority of the Museum’s collection. Less than a quarter of the collection can be on public display at any one time.

The Museum and Library are part of the Grade II listed Civic Centre complex. Although the building was not completed until after the Second World War, the basement served as a shelter during the war years.
