Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2012 - Hoppers Heritage Festival, Five Oak Green Road, Five Oak Green, TN12 6RL

Hoppers

This fascinating Grade II listed building was originally four seventeenth century agricultural workers' cottages. In the nineteenth century it was the Rose and Crown beer house, with a bowling alley in the back hall. In 1910 the property was acquired by an East End charity and became the Little Hoppers' Hospital. When hops were being harvested in September, often by workers who travelled down by train from the East End, medical facilities were made available including a children's ward and a dispensary. Welfare facilities at that time included a rudimentary big screen cinema - projecting films onto the roof. Modernised for the twenty first century, Hoppers provides a residential centre for charitable groups and churches working in the East End.
