St Andrew's Church was built in 1859 and was bombed in 1940. It was finally demolished for safety. Left behind is a wonderful area, largely untouched where indigenous plants and wildlife thrive undisturbed. There are lime trees bordering the main road, yews as might be expected and many examples of beautiful and unspoilt trees. It is another world, quiet and secluded yet so close to a main line station and town centre. Part of the wall of the old church remains where lichen can be seen growing on the stonework. Some of the Kent ragstone was used as a base for the new church which was built at the other end of the village (as it was then). Along with many interesting designs of the 20s and 30s there are several war graves. Represented here are the Marines, Air Force, Artillery and an Army driver. A list of monumental inscriptions will be available as well as a plan of the site. The area is of historical interest particularly to those researching family history or Charles Dickens, as evidence suggests his grandaughter is buried here. The area is also of great environmental interest. There will be guides available but you are also welcome to roam at leisure.
