Tunbridge Wells Heritage Open Days 2009 - Assembly Hall and Theatre, Crescent Road, TN1 2LU

Assembly Hall and Theatre, Crescent Road

The Assembly Hall is offering three guided tours back stage, which include areas not usually seen by the public. A special display of theatrical memorabilia marks the theatre’s seventieth birthday.

The Assembly Hall theatre was opened by the Marchioness Camden on Empire Day, 24 May 1939, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the granting of the town’s charter in 1889. Part of the Grade II listed Civic Centre complex, it was largely complete before the Second World War. After three years of refurbishment between 2000 and 2003 the thousand seater venue now serves as theatre, concert hall, and exhibition hall. The changing programme of musicals, pop-concerts, opera, ballet, and variety shows is enjoyed by visitors from across the Borough and beyond.
